Although a lot of communication devices are developed over time, the telephone remains the symbol of telecommunication. Over the years, the telephone has undergone different improvements that enhanced its functionality. Up to this day, companies still rely on telephones to handle important calls such as transactions, meeting plans, customer support, and project updates.

Companies once used individual phone subscriptions for handling different types of calls. This means they have to pay for each phone unit’s monthly bill. While this may not seem like much for small businesses, large companies that require hundreds, if not thousands of phone units will struggle just to keep up with their phone.

Fortunately, the Private Branch eXchange, or PBX, was developed. A PBX system is similar to the network most residential phone lines are connected to, except that the network exclusively serves a single company or business. This means a business can sign up for a single phone subscription for multiple telephone units, significantly cutting down the cost of monthly bills.


An individual phone unit connected to a PBX has an extension number, instead of an area code, unlike a conventional phone. In order to contact a particular phone unit from outside the network, the caller must first dial the designated phone number, and then dial the phone’s extension number, usually after being prompted by an answering machine. On the other hand, a unit within the hosted PBX provider network can directly contact other units by simply dialing the right extension number.

Remote hosted PBX is a more advanced version of a PBX system. In remote hosting, the hosted PBX provider enables businesses with home based employees to keep in touch. This way, callers will get the impression that the business is actually located in a single office, instead of scattered on different places. Using this kind of system, a company no longer needs to set up its own call center system.

Businesses can have their own PBX system by hiring a hosted PBX provider. Since the system is easy to operate, businesses won’t have much trouble operating it. Furthermore, since they spend less on phone bills, they can spend more resources in other more important functions.
